Techniques for applying glass cloth

First of all prepare all surfaces by filling any cracks, and sanding down with 400 grit paper.
Next, unwrap and lay the glass cloth on a clean worktop. If the cloth has large creases in it, then these can be removed by ironing with low heat.
Place wings, etc to be covered on top of the cloth, and mark around them with a felt tip pen, allowing at least a 2" overlap where more than one piece is needed.
Cut out the pieces with a sharp pair of scissors. Measure a small amount of resin/hardener (according to instructions) into a plastic beaker or used yogurt pot.
I suggest about 20cc of resin with the appropriate amount of hardener. Then thin the mixture with metholated spirits. ( about 10cc ). Mix thoroughly !!
Next, lay the dry cloth onto the wing, and position correctly. Then, using a soft brush, paint the resin on top of the cloth, starting at the middle, and working to the edges. As the resin soaks through the cloth, it will change colour from white, to translucent.
After covering the entire piece of cloth, hold the workpiece to the light, and look for any white patches that you may have missed. Simply brush a little more resin on these areas. With practice, you can cover the underneath without waiting for the resin to dry, but you will need some method of holding the workpiece.
Further pieces are applied in the same way, but make sure any overlaps are at least 2" wide. This ensures the join will not be seen later. If possible, it is better to make any joins on the underside of wings, where they would not be seen anyway!!
After covering, leave parts in a warm room so the resin can cure. This normally takes 24 hours. Then sand down all surfaces lightly with 220 grit Wet n Dry. This is best used wet, to avoid clogging. At this stage it is possible to remove most of the visible overlaps of the cloth.
Leave parts to dry thoroughly before applying a second coat. This time mix the resin/hardener, but do not thin with the metholated spirits. Brush on a very thin coat. You only need enough to cover the surfaces without leaving any brush strokes. If you put too much on, it only adds weight !!
Once again, leave to dry in a warm place before sanding again with Wet n Dry. Start with 220 grit, and then finish off with 400 grit. All joins should now have disappeared and you are ready to paint

Tips for success

1. Fill all cracks, gaps etc before applying glass cloth
2. Cut out all cloth before mixing resin
3. Measure accurately and stir thoroughly
4. Mix small batches of resin at a time
5. Thin first coat with metholated spirits
6. Apply directly onto cloth
7. Check for missed areas and add more resin
8. Aim to use each mixed batch within 15 minutes
9. Clean brush with Metholated spirits after using each batch.
10. Overlaps must be at least 2" wide.
11. Work in warm environment.
12. Leave to cure in warm environment.
13. Allow each coat 24 hours to cure
14. Apply second coat without thinning.
15. Sand between coats with Wet n Dry
